With a team of 11 tasters, over 42,000 wines rated, and numerous terroirs explored worldwide, James Suckling magazine releases its Top 100 Wines of the Year annually. Thus, we are delighted to start 2025 with fantastic news: our Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 2022 has been selected among the top cuvées! Before diving into the details of this prestigious distinction, let’s take a look back at the origins of this exceptional wine.
The story of the Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane cuvée
The Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane is the result of a vision initiated by Claude and Pierre Amadieu in the late 1980s. Their ambition was to create a blend centered around Mourvèdre, cultivated on our high-altitude vineyards. This typically Provençal grape variety, sometimes temperamental, was introduced early on by Pierre Amadieu Sr. in the 1950s, near the Romane building. Despite the little interest it attracted at the time, eight years of rigorous selection were required to perfect this cuvée. Today, it is vinified with passion by Jean-Marie.
A sun-drenched vintage, built for aging.
What we remember from the 2022 vintage:
A sun-drenched vintage with a warm climate, built for aging. The wine is powerful and can be enjoyed now thanks to the finesse and smoothness of the tannins and its beautiful balance.
- Warm vintage
- Built for aging
- Powerful and silky
- Enjoyable now
- Perfect balance
The 2022 vintage stands out for its exceptionally high temperatures and marked drought. Fortunately, some rainfall before the harvest helped rebalance the ripeness of the grapes. This powerful wine is already enjoyable now thanks to the finesse and smoothness of its tannins, while still showing remarkable aging potential. Jean-Marie Amadieu
A track record for this cuvée, regularly ranked among the best wines in the world.

These accolades reflect the hard work of our entire team and highlight the exceptional quality of our Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane.
This wine offers all the concentration and spicy complexity one expects from Gigondas. It showcases a subtle balance of elderberry, licorice, wild herbs, and chocolate notes. The tannins are powerful yet velvety, with a finish that is both bold and refined. This blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, from old vines planted in the 1950s, has great aging potential. Enjoy it now or cellar it for the years to come. James Suckling
This recognition reinforces our commitment to producing exceptional wines and motivates us to continue this beautiful winemaking journey!
